Women of the Senate

Here is the video I showed as part of my presentation. Also, here is the 2nd part of the interview that Diane Sawyer. It's very interesting to see the interactions of the women of both parties talking about what they envision the Senate doing and the direction of the country.

John Stewart and the Double Standard

This article covers a story by John Stewart, in which he discusses the treatment of women in the media. As Stewart is the host of The Daily Show, the article includes a clip from the show highlighting women in politics and the media.  He characterizes the coverage as a double standard, similar to most issues we have discussed in class. A lot of the article and video clip discuss very similar topics we highlighted throughout the semester.

Emma Stone is great

Spiderman is my favorite superhero. Naturally, I've been keeping up with all these interviews for the release of the newest film. This one caught my attention. Emma Stone, who plays Andrew Garfield's love interest both onscreen and off-screen, totally calls him out on saying that making a costume is a feminine thing to do. I thought this was hilarious and definitely a teaching moment. Check it out!

Plus, they're just great.

Columbia University Accused of Mishandling Sexual Assaults

Columbia University students have decided to charge their school with a federal complaint after they say the university failed victims of sexual assault.  CNN reports that the students claim that not only did Columbia discourage victims from reporting the crimes, they also let those who committed the act to stay on campus, did not punish the perpetrators accordingly, and discriminated against the victims according to their sexual orientation.  I found this article interesting because it shows that even at the most expensive and prestigious colleges, people can still find themselves victims of sexual assault.  it will be interesting to see how the case plays out.

Inside Amy Schumer skit

In class today I mentioned a skit by comedian Amy Schumer where she is playing a female soldier in a  war video game and her character is raped. Amy is then given the option to report the incident, she chooses to do so and it does not turn out the way she expected. Check out the video below:

If the video doesn't work, here's a link to the video clip: http://www.cc.com/video-clips/ac9kui/inside-amy-schumer-a-very-realistic-military-game

Double standard or Unqualified?

I picked this article because it is just another example of the media bias when it comes to women. They question whether or not a female state assemblywoman is ready to be Lt. governor because she is young and "untested". However, I rarely see articles critical of men who run for higher office the first time they run. The double standard has to stop.
The Great List of Things I Can't Do Because I have Daughters

This article sparked my interest by the title of course. It was written by a father who has two daughters. Instead of a negative list, it is the exact opposite. He breaks the gender roles of his daughters at a young age. I love his ideas and the way he bluntly puts things. I have a young female cousin who is in love with legos and Darth Vader over barbies and princesses. I used to build race car tracks with my brothers, and they used to play barbies with me. I think breaking gender stereotypes at an early age is a personal decision, and there's nothing wrong with it.

Pantsuits and Jimmy Fallon

Fallon in Hot Water After Making Cracks About Hilary Clinton's Pantsuits

Jimmy Fallon was booed by his audience, following a joke that announced Chelsea Clinton's pregnancy. He stated, "If it's a girl, it'll get some of Chelsea's old hand-me-downs, and if it's a boy, it'll get some of Hillary's....it's a little pantsuit! It's a little cream pantsuit." Many have taken great offense to Fallon's joke. Personally, I thought the joke was expected and not meant maliciously, after all Fallon is a comedian.... but it was a low blow.

What is Beauty?

I found this video and it immediately got me thinking about true beauty. I had never thought about beauty in their experiences. It really makes you stop and think.
