abortion...do you have a choice?

This semester I am taking a religion class that is turning out to not just focus on religion! Our latest topic is on abortion.  Not saying that I am pro abortion, however I think it is a persons choice if they think they should have the unborn child.  The quote on the bottom of the image is a perfect! The good thing about the US is we do have a choice! There have been so many opinions on this topic yet many have not, nor will they have to be put in a position to make a difficult decision like aborting an unborn child.

  1. People get so fired up whenever they hear the word "abortion". Everyone immediately has an opinion that usually cannot be changed no matter what the other person says. It is amazing how many men are against abortion, when like the poster says they will never be pregnant. I don't understand how men can have such strong opinions over this topic when they can never feel the experience. It is so easy for men to just run away when they find out that they got a girl pregnant. People should really think about how much a pregnancy can change life, and not be so judgmental if a woman chooses to have one. I mean it is America this is the country of freedom, yet there are still so many restrictions.

  2. I just wish the word abortion could be said without everything getting so tense. Whether you're ProLife or ProChoice, it should not be the MILLION POUND elephant in the room.

  3. This topic is so frustrating for me. I understand your points about a man's opinion on the issue but I feel as though part of the argument is ignored. I am technically pro-choice because I believe the government should not tell us what we can or cannot do. However, I cannot imagine a world in which I were to have one. I do believe it is killing a person. I do not want my tax dollars being used to perform these procedures. That is where I become tense.

    1. I feel like this topic is frustrating for a lot of people who have strong opinions on the matter, but like the others who commented, and you, I don't think it should be the government's place to decide what a woman can and cannot to in regards to this procedure. I especially disagree with the idea of the government deciding this when it is so disproportionately occupied by men.

I also think a lot of the facts on abortion are misunderstood or twisted to fit everyone's agenda- pro-life and pro-choice alike. People get this idea stuck in their head and then are so unwilling to listen to anyone on the subject that they shut-out any conversation which might make any purposeful change.

There are plenty of things that I don't want my tax dollars paying for- bombs, police who abuse their power, congress people who refuse to cooperate with each other, drone strikes- but we don't really get to decide. If we could parse out our tax dollars where we wanted them and in what amount, our country would be a different place. A very confusing place, I think what with deciding who gets to use highways they didn't pay taxes for or who to hold responsible for paying for public education.

Unfortunately, another poorly understood fact about abortion is what actually lowers the rate of women who get them- proper sex education. Studies show that women who receive comprehensive sex education as opposed to abstinence only education are far less likely to end up getting an abortion than those who don't. Access to affordable contraceptives also significantly lowers abortion rates.

Really what I'm getting at it that the issue is not simple- your tax dollars are responsible for so many things and abortion really isn't even close to the big ones. Planned Parenthood, the organization that so many worry about being funded, provides an abundance of affordable health care procedures for women beyond abortions. Many women attend PP for contraceptives, gynecological exams, and to check on the health of their pregnancy that it seems silly to me for people to want to defund it so badly.

I guess that what frustrates me the most about this issue is that the people trying to make all of these decisions aren't even close to the demographic of people that it affects- most women who get abortions are not white, middle class, elderly men. I also think that there are so many more pressing issues in the world and in our country that I don't understand why we're so focused on something that was settled by Roe v Wade so many years ago.

  4. Kind of a side comment but this blog post reminded me of this post.

I thought this was an interesting perspective on the issue. I have never had a similar experience so I can only attempt to understand through other peoples writings.
