Bear with me, this article is a bit longer.
But! It was actually a good read. It talks of how Halloween has become an exceedingly degrading holiday for women. Early suffragists fought against prostitution and the conditions/names women faced.
Have things changed though? Take a gander at the article!
Halloween discrimination
(I'm a fan of thought catalog in general. Look through the site some time, it's got good stuff)
I did bear with you- the article wasn't really too long. :) It reminds me of a piece of SLAM poetry that I saw a while back during the Halloween month. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXk3uhlhAVY) The piece is almost parallel with the article you posted. It talks about how costumes have gotten smaller and more revealing but also with how it should be a woman's choice to don whatever she sees fit. Very interesting article and topic in general.
ReplyDeleteNot that it's particularly relevant, but I tend to make my Halloween costumes because being a bigger girl means all that prepackaged polyester isn't particularly flattering. I always think homemade costumes are more interesting and creative anyway. Plus, it's always really fun to shock people when you say "I made it!" :)

ReplyDeleteI think that the skimpy costumes that women wear these days display that women in America have a freedom of expression and sexuality that is practically unparalleled in recorded time. So, in that sense it is a symbolic display of freedom. I agree with the article (and discussions in other classes) that labels can be detrimental to our society, and this is a great example of how a label can propel interpersonal violence.
