A Shocking Image

Wow! The only word that came to mind when I first came across this photo. I could only stare at it as I processed what was before me.

Who would even this of this as a concept? And then think it was a good idea?

I waited until now to post this to our blog because I wanted to read their statement. It was art the article said. I do not see it that way. Do you?

  1. I have seen this image before, although I'm still not sure how to feel about it. I don't really see it as an image of repression, I just think it's a bit of a stupid photo. I don't think it looks like a piece of 'high art'. I think it looks unnecessary. The choice to use a black woman could have been coincidental, but what isn't coincidental is how often black female bodies are treated like commodities. One specific example of the commodification of black female bodies is how Miley Cyrus treats and objectifies her background dancers.

Anyway- there was actually a response to this image by another photographer: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/01/24/gay-russian-artist-black-woman-chair_n_4659014.html

    I thought it was interesting.
