Maine-court-rules-favor-transgender-pupil

I found this article interesting because I have never put much thought into our right to use the bathroom. It's something pretty important and necessary; everyone has got to go. A 16 year-old transgender student in Maine, who has identified as a female since the age of 2, finally won her battle of being allowed to use the girls bathroom at school. The decision was granted from Maine's highest court, and found that the school violated the state's anti-discrimmination law by making her use the staff bathroom.

  1. This is a topic I have discussed recently in another class, we cited this and a similar ruling as a basis for discussion. I think that transgender issues help put an ironic twist on other social issues which highlights the necessity of an innovative and open approach to public policy. I am going to post the other article we discussed involving a much younger child in Colorado. In that case the court offered a remarkably similar holding.

  2. I have always took for granted how easy it is for me to find/choose a restroom as well. I have read in the past that people in the transgender community set-up online maps so that they can find public places with gender-neutral bathrooms (I went ahead and looked it up. There is an iphone app called TranSquat). I can't imagine having to worry about facing possible discrimination and physical harm because of the bathroom I chose to enter.
