Not always good to be a princess...

This article is very interesting.  I tells about how the Disney Princesses have influenced little girls for the worse.  They give little girls the since that women need to sit around wait on a man to save them.  Children want to be like their idols and in most little girls lives that is a Disney Princess.  If a princess doesn't do it then neither can I is what they tend to start believing.  I am sure that Walt was not creating these characters to make women look as if they were week, but to the adult eye that is exactly what these characters did. This article then goes in to talk about how the term princess is used more than the word girl when people are referring to a new baby girl.  To me i think it is all in how a parent presents the word.  Just because you call a little girl a princess does not mean that she has to act or be treated as one.  You can show them a real life princess and bring them back to reality by explaining that those on tv are pretend.

  1. Interesting...I think they might be giving the movies a little too much credit (or in this case blame) for the cultural changes that some people are seeing in our society. At the end of the day, the Disney Princess movies also teach girls how to follow their heart, stand up for themselves, and look past other people's perceptions of right/wrong (and as the article says: beast/beauty). I think the effects of parenting and positive reinforcement are much more important then the perceived impact of watching a movie while young.
