About a week ago, Chimamanda Adichie did an interview with NPR and was asked about her thoughts on Beyoncé. This is what Adichie had to say:
"I think that anything that gets young people talking about feminism is a very good thing. I also think that I have a problem with the idea of feminism as being some sort of exclusive party that someone gets to decide whether you can come, and also the idea that somehow a woman who is comfortable with her sexuality, that there’s something wrong with that."
Considering how much criticism Beyoncé gets sometimes for being so open with her sexuality, I thought Adichie's response was pretty interesting.
I think feminism should encompass the idea that women such as Beyoncé can own their own sexuality without being degraded as sluts. What Beyoncé shows us is that it is perfectly okay to be comfortable in your body and sexuality. Much like it should be a woman's choice to cover herself (like with a hijab), it should also be a woman's choice to own and flaunt her body- not for others, but because she is comfortable in her skin. I think Beyoncé displays a really healthy model of adult sexuality.
