Roles of Female Oscar Winners

I found this infographic on the Lean In Tumblr that was posted the other day, but it was originally posted on the Huffington Post. I found it interesting because the MissRepresentation video talked a lot about the portrayal of women in television and movies. Based on the picture, over half of the characters that won an Oscar were either supporting roles of other people (wife, mother, girlfriend, etc.) or historical figures. I noticed a disproportionate amount of award winners from the 2000s are in the "Historical" category. This tells me that there needs to be more original, creative roles that star women as groundbreaking characters. The solution, according to Huffington Post, is to get more female directors into Hollywood. I don't know how many of you have seen Orange is the New Black, but I love the show for this very reason (among many others). It follows so many great female characters with complex backgrounds. I believe one powerful way to change society's view of women is to start the change in the depictions of women on screen.

  1. I think it's interesting that most of the winners fit into a category where women fulfill stereotypical gender roles. It reminds me of the idea that when women fill roles outside of the stereotypical, like leadership positions, they are not as well liked. This is an interesting find for sure.
