This month the world celebrated the International Women's Day to show recognition of the progress women have made. Two women were reported to have set themselves on fire as a form of self-immolation. In Kurdistan as many as 10,000 women (and girls as young as 13) have set fire to themselves since they gained autonomy in 1991. This is crazy to think that they would kill themselves as a way to show their freedom. This article goes into more details and has quotes from families in Kurdistan.

I cannot imagine the desperation these women must feel to set themselves ablaze in their own homes. Shocking that some of them are so young, yet still feel so hopeless. It reminds me of the famous picture of the monk lighting himself on fire in the middle of a street as a form of protest. You know things are screwed up when people feel the need to set themselves on fire rather then deal with injustices in the world. And to answer your question, no I cannot imagine dousing myself in gasoline and striking a match.
