Devils Advocate
As we discussed in class regarding different topics while blogging, I found this article http://www.martynemko.com/articles/saving-our-young-men_id1557.
In this article, the author argues society's outlook on men has put men at a disadvantage against women. The male author provides different stats and information on why his views are correct. I do not agree with it 100% but looking at both sides of this issue increases our knowledge overall.

This article is interesting to me because the thought of reverse discrimination, or even reverse hate, is something I worry about. Women should not hate on men or act as though they're not necessary-- they absolutely are. They are just as valuable as women. However, women progressing in the world should not discourage men. The author mentioned white males applying for jobs and experiencing the anti-white male bias. I would suggest, instead of being discouraged, remember that women and minorities are subject to this consistently. The author writes in regard to the oppression of white males: "So, they return to their parents’ sofas, sleeping late, playing video games during the day and getting wasted at night." Women and minorities would still be property, if this was the approach they took. You persevere. You stay in school. You apply to the next company. You stand strong.
ReplyDeleteThis might just be that I'm a little sensitive to articles like this, but this guy seems to be complaining that the dominance structure- where white men are at the top- is finally being picked away at, piece by piece. It seems to this guy that women and minorities are being over represented, but really, they're being represented for the first time. In a world where we are so used to seeing power as a white male only privilege, it might seem overwhelming that suddenly there is gender and racial diversity appearing.
ReplyDeleteI hardly think that, as the author says, we have "In our attempt to lift up girls and women, we have destroyed boys and men." The idea of reverse discrimination and reverse racism are farces so long as the power structure is what it is, with whites and men on top. The privilege to discriminate lies with those in power and we still live in a white man's world.
Now, should we (women) start raging against men and try to stamp them down as inferior? No. Should we claim that they are all slovenly fools who are too stupid to run a marathon let alone a company? No. What this man is witnessing is a slow changing of the tides which has been a long time coming. Those in power are rarely willing to let power go without a fight. Perhaps, for the first time in his life as a white male he is finally feeling the sting of a world where young white boys must work just as hard as everyone else; where they are not given the automatic grant of a 'white privilege'.
