Italian PM appoints 8 women of 16 positions

The new Prime Minister of Italy, Metteo Renzi, has made some made some substantial changes in appointing his cabinet. He reduced the number of individuals making up his cabinet from twenty-one to sixteen, half of which are female. The youth of Renzi’s appointments is also discussed in this article. Marianna Madia and Maria Elena Boschi are breaking ground as the youngest to serve in a cabinet, both thirty-three years of age. Another notable appointee is Fredrica Mogherini, at age forty-one she is the youngest to ever serve as Foreign Minister. The equal division of minister positions has never happened before.

  1. It sounds like the prime minister is certainly trying to make a statement, not simply because an equal number of men and women were appointed to cabinet positions, but because the women are also some of the youngest women to ever hold such political offices. The prime minister also reduced the number of cabinet members that were previously positioned.

It would be interesting to see if a rise in certain political topics occurs as result of the change in cabinet ratio.

  2. I think its a good thing for Italy. I thought it was pretty cool that he not only appointed an equal amount of women, but also the youth he injected into his cabinet. By consolidating the cabinet Im sure those appointed now yield more power/influence.
