Status of Women in U.S. Media

The Women's Media Center recently published a new report that shows how very far we are from reaching gender equality in the media. According to the report, women are still underrepresented and misrepresented in the media - from newsrooms to TV and movies.

BuzzFeed breaks down the report and highlights some concerning numbers. For example:
  • Of the 100 top-grossing films of 2012, women only made up 28.8% of characters with speaking parts
  • Women make up 36% of newsroom staff
  • 12% of white women directed primetime TV shows; compared to 2% of minority women
