I guess some forms of gender disparity are not that bad. It is weird that as genders level out in other regards, males are overwhelmingly convicted more than females.
I believe that this mostly is because of discretion. Cops judge women as being less harmful. Justices judge women as being not able to deal with prison. Juries find women harder to convict (generally).
So, in the criminal system women get a break for being prejudged as dainty.
I hadn't really thought of this before. But I can definitely see how it works. I've heard plenty stories of girls getting out of a ticket (typically from a male cop).
ReplyDeleteThis is kind of an interesting phenomena. It's strange how our stereotypes of women affect our legislative branch like this. I think you can also see it in how women are more frequently awarded custody of children over men in custody battles.
