| No really. It has an enzyme that only those with penises can digest. You've been warned. |
I'm not sure this needs any explanation.
But I'll go ahead anyway.
This ad is so supremely ridiculous that it's hard to see it as much more than a self aware farce. Is Dr. Pepper being serious or are they offering the world a casual *winkwink* *nudgenudge*? Do they mean to imply that their product is too powerful and intense for women to handle or are they poking fun at the idea that a soda can be gendered? Is this a classic case of the self aware sexism that appears in ads now-a-days where the joke is thrown so out of proportion that it can't be anything but a parody? If it is a parody and not just really bad advertising, does this kind of parody make things better or reinforce our society's already stunted views of gender?
What do you guys think?
Like the self-aware sexism that you are talking about, I don't think they really intend to offend women. The ad is so ridiculous and overt in it's pursuit of the American male consumer that I have never taken the commercials seriously. It's a diet soda, which some males think of as "girly" because we are the only ones that like to watch our caloric intake...right? lol I would be interested in knowing if their ploy actually worked to bring in men who do not normally drink diet sodas. I would still drink it, regardless of the ad, but that's because I love Dr.Pepper. If anything, I think the ad isn't completely malicious because of the reaction is sparks within people over sexism. At least people seem more aware that it's ridiculous...I hope.
