...morning as we filed in for Dr. Gideon's 344. He complimented Chad, James, and me on dressing nice (for mock trials), and further informed us that he had done so because he had complimented several ladies for dressing nice today and had to balance it out.
It got me thinking, and you know that's not hard for critical person like myself,lol.... IT made me think about men and women approach compliments. For women, perhaps it is easier to compliment a man or woman on their looks, since women are constantly bombarded with media that would teach them to do so. ?
AND men find it harder to compliment another man out ....hell I dont know, homophobia (I'm swinging blind!!! lol)..... I believe that I judge (or at least take note of) people on their looks (how they talk, smell, move, dress, etc.... ), but I am very hesitant to compliment a woman on her looks. I might say something, like "You looks nice, too" as a response, but I rarely would bring it up that a woman looks pretty.
And Dr. Wheeler, he stated that he felt a need to balance out the compliments, so people wont judge him. Whether he was actually worried about judgement or not, he did raise the question of whether males feel a compulsion not to compliment a women based on looks.
Afterall, to compliment a woman could lead to being viewed as only carrying about her external traits, and not her intellectual or personal abilities. Said simply a man could look like a bigot or pervert, so we seem to approach compliments cautiously in many situations.
I guess.
