This week, the Senate took a vote to advance Senate
legislation designed to guarantee equal pay between sexes. This article from CNN reports that the vote
was 53-44 that the legislation would NOT move forward. Senator Barbara Mikulski (D) of Maryland was
the primary leader behind the bill.
After learning the Democrats did not have enough votes to
forward the bill, she argued "So I say square your shoulders, put your
lipstick on, and let's fight another day."
A survey taken by Democratic pollster Stan Greenberg of the Women's
Voices Women Vote Action Fund reports that in order to encourage more women to
vote, which would theoretically increase the number of both Democratic and
female office holdings, party candidates need to strongly address equal pay,
equal treatment by insurance companies, and more affordable child care.
I think we will be seeing a lot more regarding legislation
intended to close the wage gap between sexes. I am a little concerned that the Democrats seem to be taking the problem more seriously than Republicans. I would think this would be an issue that everyone is more concerned about, because even if more women are reportedly Democrat, everyone has a mother, daughter, or female friend deserving of the same pay as men.
