- being able to walk down the street without someone crossing to the other side because they're automatically afraid of you
- being able to have drunk sex without being considered a rapist because women are the "innocent party by default"
- the idea that women and children should be saved first in emergency situations, because otherwise you would be seen as a "monster" for "saving yourself before you save others"
- being represented in a positive way on TV while men are protrayed as "ugly, lazy slobs"
I didn't necessarily agree with everything on the list (for example the idea that female privilege is being able to decide not to have a child) but they were all very interesting to think about. As a woman, I've never really stopped to think about the ways we are more privileged than men. Number four on the list (men portrayed negatively on TV) was one I hadn't particularly thought of before but I can definitely think of a lot of shows where men, particularly husbands, are portrayed as the goofy husband who can't seem to do anything right - or at least not without messing up at least a little bit in the process.
For the guys in our class: what did you think about the list?
I did think that this was a pretty interesting list. Generally whenever we compare males and females we automatically start thinking about how men have the advantage over women. This was an interesting article. Thanks for sharing!
