Last week I posted an article discussing a newly
posed bill by Democrats entitled the “paycheck fairness act.”
This week I found another article related to
the debate explaining why the Republicans find issue with the bill.
GOP members argued that “there are already laws
against pay discrimination” and that another law would only perpetuate
government interference in the workplace.
I wonder if a possible solution would be adding an amendment to one of
those laws that already exist, because they cannot be helping is the wage
disparity is still so large.
Prior to members of Congress voting on the bill,
President Obama signed executive orders that forbid federal contractors from
punishing employees who share information with others about their pay and
require contractors to share pay data, including sex and race. President Obama
supported the orders by explaining pay secrecy, which is used to describe
situations in which women do not know they are being paid less than male
coworkers due to not knowing what others are paid.
Democrats are hoping that showcasing GOP opposition
will help them to gain more votes during the next elections and to raise money
for the midterms.
