Sexual Harassment of India's Women in Politics

As we have discussed the issues facing women who get into politics in the United States, this article discusses the issues facing women who get into politics in India. The circumstances of the Indian political system is very different from those faced in the US. The article asserts that Indian women in politics face the physical harassment, sexual slurs, and innuendos when making public appearances. Nagma, an actress transitioning to politics, has been “publicly pawed” twice, even with an escort of multiple body guards. One of the instances is referred to as an act of molestation, the other a “grab and kiss” incident. She is now accompanied by two gunmen when making public appearances. The article discusses other politicians who face similar circumstances in their efforts to campaign, some who refuse to go into crowds in general. These acts are attempts to embarrass the women who are running for office which have led to some women being escorted by as many as 25 men! The fact that this is an issue for women in India, a democracy, is a bit surprising. I can’t even imagine this happening in the US, but it’s a prevalent issue in India. It’s terrible that this is an issue in India, as unwelcome sexual advances have become a political tool to embarrass and suppress women from participating in the political system.
